Sunday, Something Sunday
Posted by Erundur Anwamehtar on February 15th, 2004, at 9:48am

Bounce.

So today’s been one of the better Sunday’s I’ve had thus far this semester. Church was fine. The sermon today was on David. We’re doing a sermon serious on him. Today we looked at 1 Samuel 21 and Psalm 34. One of the interesting things to see was that Psalm 34 was written about the time when David was experiencing the things talked about in 1 Sam. 21. Unfortunately, I oft found myself distracted this morning and failed to catch some of the sermons main points.

One of the things I did catch was the occurance of the word righteous in the psalm. Verse 15: “The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous and his ears toward their cry.” My pastor made the point that it’s the righteous people in this passage that God is listening to and rescuing. And the only way we’re righteous is through Christ’s blood.

This evening after church, nap, phone call from mom, talking briefly with Cora, and dinner (yes, that’s all I did till 5PM), I got to spend some time hanging out with God. A couple of books I’m reading right now and enjoying are “Children of the Living God” by Sinclair B. Ferguson and “Wild at Heart” by John Eldredge.

*Highlights from “Children of the Living God” Chapter 2*
• talking about John 1:12-13- “Moreover we can become his children only by the decision of God’s will. The new birth of which John speaks here and elsewhere is not ours by nature, nor is it within our natural powers to accomplish! Not only is this devasating to human pride, but it also underlines the spiritual peril of our natural condition.”
• in the conclusion of the chapter, he’s discussing regeneration and new birth in Christ - “God alone is able to bring us to new birth, through the Spirit. He does so through the power of Christ’s resurrection from the dead (1 Peter 1:3). … Jesus Christ speaks into the death or our hearts, calls us by name, and we respond (Jn. 5:25; 10:3). As at the first creation, so in the new creation God breathes on us with his Spirit, and we are brought into new life. Regeneration is a sovereign act of God.”

Tasty Morsels of Goodness from “Wild at Heart” Chapter 3
• “For after years of living in a cage, a lion no longer even believes it is a lion . . . and a man no longer believes he is a man.”
• “Most of what you encounter when you meet a man is a facade, an elaborate fig leaf, a brilliant disguise.” In this section of the chapter, he’s discussing how like Adam hid when he saw his own nakedness, men are hiding as well. “We are hiding, every last one of us. Well aware that we, too, are not what we were meant to be, desperately afraid of exposure, terrified of being seen for what we are and are not, we have run off into the bushes. We hide in our office, at the gym, behind the newspaper and mostly behind our personality.” I don’t know about the other men out there reading this (or the women that have evidenced our behaviour), but I totally feel like this.

In recent weeks especially I’ve been afraid of my future, felt lonely and incapable of accomplishing the things set before me. It’s so not true though! Lies — all of it, lies. Instead of facing reality in light of my relationship with God as his son, I spent many hours of many days hiding in fear. I mean this literally as much as emotionally and spiritually to an extent. Lonely hours watching episodes of Scrubs _en masse_ on my computer. Staying up late into the night listening to music, scrounging the web for new music. These things are a huge part of why my computer is now packed up and sitting in my closet. (Yes, I’m down in the lab typing this up.)

So what’s changed in my life between now and a week ago? As far as my standing with God, nothing has changed. I am no less and no more his son this week than I was last week, but I’m trying to remember my true identity (son of God, not son of Sin or son of Death) and live out of it instead of living out of fear.

Happy Snow Day!

Wow, what luck. I wasn’t paying any attention Saturday night, then I woke up yesterday morning and everything was icy. Cora got in my car and I started scraping the windows. * scrape scrape scrape * “hmm….” * scrape scrape scrape * I heard Cora laughing from in the car. We decided that the 5 milimeters of ice would take half an hour to scrape off, so we decided we’d be late for church so we went back inside.

Last night was even more incredible. I got word of people going sledding, so I met them down in the lobby at 9pm. In our search for sleds, we wound up at the Wal-Mart south of town. Apparently, “it’s spring in retail.” Ok, seriously, IT’S SNOWING PEOPLE! Sell us sleds. Wal-Mart would’ve made at least $10 if they’d been selling sleds yesterday.

We got to the hill out at Holmes Lake yesterday, climbed to the top, and then we made use of the cardboard boxes we’d acquired. They managed fairly decently, although they were destroyed and wound up in the garbage by the time we left. So benevolent souls gave us a real sled which faired far better than the cardboard even though the sled was beat up and worn.

Afterwards there was hot chocolate and popcorn in Ray’s room, then back to my room. Oh, the joy of non-wet clothes.

And then I woke up and then I checked the internet and then I found out school was cancelled and then I decided to stay up since the day’s first activities didn’t involve trudging to class through the snow.

So now I have more time to study. * sigh *

Class Registration and Other Happennings
Posted by Erundur Anwamehtar on October 27th, 2003, at 10:00am

I registered for classes this morning. I logged onto eNroll and discover a hold on my account. In the midst of frustration, I dressed and quickly walked to the administration building, removed the hold by letting them know I was caught up on payments, and then left. I signed up for classes in the Union and got all that I decided upon. Everyone tells me 18 credits is a nasty semester. After seeing my schedule, I agree with them.

The whole process was done in 20 minutes.

On Saturday I went to the NU vs. Iowa St. game courtesy of Miss Tracy with a K. The game entertained me well for the first half. The second half was more boring, but we won 28 - 0 and that’s always good. I’m begginning to feel like a Husker fan.

Then I painted windows for a couple hours.

Sunday I woke up at 10:06 AM, rushed to get ready, and got downstairs by 10:25. Nobody was waiting in the lobby as I’d expected, so I decided they left already. I got in my car, drove to church. Everybody was in the sanctuary and Stu was talking, so I assumed Sunday school was in progress. I sat down. A few minutes later, I realized it was the end of the early service and that Daylight-Saving time ended.

The Sunday Review

I had lunch with Tom (a man from church) and some of his relatives today. Roast, potatoes, carrots, and gravy. His mom is a good cook. Cookie dough ice cream satisfies me. After dinner, he showed me the three acres where he grew up. It’s in a forest which is rare for Nebraska. His father was into botany and and Tom also knows some. He named and pointed to several trees which I barely know the names of. We took out a 1972 Pontiac Nova for a drive. It’s the oldest car I’ve driven. It’s got a nice engine in it.

Tonight, I went out country swing dancing. It’s the first time I’ve been to the Pla-Mor this semester and I had a great time. A group started going earlier because one of the members is a working man and goes to bed early. I used up my extra energy for the day.

The last dance included a fast-playing fiddle. Jill and I danced to it and attempted to match the speed, but our pace changed sporadically. We were both running out of energy. Afterwards, Jake informed us that someone commented that we were like a “spastic ADD couple”. I’ll take it as a compliment

Good times. G’night.

Spider-Man Was Cooler

Spider-Man was definitely better to watch then the football game yesterday. Alas, the Big Red has been humiliated once again. I went to Amy H.’s house to watch the game and ended up being there for about 11 hours. There was a slight break involved in running to the store to get the ingredients for dinner. Amy, Amy, Phil, Kevin, Kim, and I all ate some chili, chicken noodle soup, and cinamon rolls. Home cooking is awesome.

Today’s gone well so far, too, other then complete lack of homework getting done. Church at Zion like usual this morning and after that went over to the Lutheran Chapel for an English Conversation Partner lunch. I’ve got a Chinese conversation partner now. I didn’t actually meet him at the dinner. After the dinner, Cora, Yaling, and I went over to a building on campus where both Yaling and Dong Li have their offices. Dong Li is my conversation partner. I got to talk to him and his wife, Catherine (she’s Chinese, but this is the name she asked to be called). He’s interested in learning about God and I’m going to meet him at church again next week and hopefully be able to talk to him about Christianity and what it means. I was surprised when one of his first statements was “I want to know more about God.” Anyway, if you’d like to, please pray for Li. And that God would show me what he wants me to be saying to him.

I’m going to go work on some homework now. Latez!
