I’ve had the pleasure of discovering haikoo.org, a collaborative haiku website created by Tom Music. I met Tom about a month ago at the inaugural Seattle Startup Drinks event (sidenote: never ye fear, I drank no beer). I saw him again yesterday and was reminded of his site and told of new enhancements to it.

The concept of Haikoo.org is a pleasant one and simple. Each person contributes one line of the haiku.

An example. I begin a haiku by giving it a name and the first line. I began one yesterday, and it has already been completed.

Sixes
A Saturday thick
with smoke, fear, and promises
that Sunday will come

(Participants: anwamehtar, kellynisms, tom)

He recently added another feature that allows people to add Youtube videos of the poem being recited. I particularly enjoyed the following one:

streetside
little old lady
release your grocery cart
those shackles are loud

(Participants: vixy, chrispin, WEContact)

Click here to view the embedded video.

And this one by marmay9, dimelane, EnFeu and performed by kellynisms is worth having a laugh about:

confetti
life keeps taking me
by suprise, and it makes me
separate, explode

Click here to view the embedded video.

It’s worth admiring the completed poems, and if you like the premise sign up and try it out.

I wanted to provide a brief amount of context for the poem A Warrior Cries. Yes, I did write it almost three years ago in 2004. I was looking through the poems I had posted today and wanted to post a non-emo poem. Poetry for me is mostly self-reflective, but here is an example of a poem that contains something more. Plus, the rhyming actually worked out well.

A Warrior Cries
A Poem by Erundur Anwamehtar
8/22/2004

Everyday, the war continues
with flaming arrows flying far.
The warriors fight for countless hours
going forth, never back, beneath the stars.

A Hero arisen leads the fight.
He’s drawn many people to his side
and constantly they live in light
of His love. He gave all to stop the tide.

He gave them life, his life, and they live.
“I have come that YOU may have life!”
He shouts for men and women to give
their chains to him and leave behind eternal strife.

Many join – many, but not all.
Some hate the light, prefer blindness,
and run through broad streets until they fall
forever because they refused a Hero’s kindness.

Rally, men, rally to his cry!
Turn, women, you must open your eyes!
Look now, all, and realize
you must be on the right side
before you die
fighting for lies.

A Poem by Erundur Anwamehtar
6/21/2007

Anchors carry more weight than
cement shoes attached to our love.
The way you cry, I know
you’ve given up.
When we hit the bottom, tell me so
then tell me nothing.

I hear your words as we descend,
the fish swim faster and move me more –
no longer can we pretend

everything is going to be okay,
everything will be alright,
our love will make it through the night
our love will help us fight
the fears and keep us near

until we say nothing
forevermore.
