My names in Elvish:
Erundur OR Heldacarite

Via quenya lapseparma: -

It seems that almost everyone who interested in Tolkien and particularly in his invented languages played with an idea to have his/her own name in an Elvish language. Some use names taken from Tolkien’s books, while the others try to coin their own Elvish nickname. It seems to be a common habit. Sometimes people create their own poetic Elvish name and sometimes they try to translate the meaning of their real name into Elvish.

Yes, I too am now interested in knowing what my name is in Quenya, the language of the high elves. I was able to find my name on the elvish names site. Now, my name is Calvin, and it has an unfortunate meaning associated with it - “bald.”

CALVIN (m.) - from Norman French ‘bald’; perhaps Heldacarite (= “bare-headed”, helda “bare”, cár “head” + ite, cf. maite “handed” from má “hand”) or Úfindo (”without hairs”)

In search of a more meaningful name and perhaps better associated with me, I looked around the site for other names. Here’s a few I found.

OBADIAH (m.) - Heb. ’servant of God’; Eru “God”; -ndur “servant of”, thus Erundur

MARA (f.) - Heb. ‘bitter’; sára “bitter”, thus Sára itself (to keep similarity) or Sáre with a fem. ending

If you’re interested what your own name is, just head to the site. Below is a list of the names of some of my homies:
• BENJAMIN (m.) - Heb. ’son of the right hand’ and also ’son of the south’; unfortunately Quenya word for “south” hyarmen is related to hyarya “left”, while Hebrew word for “right hand” is related to “south”, but Hyarion (-ion “son”) would be good
• CHASE (m.) - ‘chase, hunt’; raime “hunt, hunting”, thus Raimo or Raimon
• CRYSTAL (f.) - ‘crystal’; silima “crystal substance” (the Silmarils were made of it), thus Silime; or more literally: derived from Greek ‘ice’; helce “ice”, thus Helce itself
• JENNIFER, JENNY (f.) - Celtic ‘white/fair + soft/smooth’; losse “white”; pasta “smooth”, thus Lossepaste; or Celtic ‘white + wave’, so Lossefalme (falma “wave”)
• MATTHEW (m.) - Heb. ‘gift of God’; Eru “God”; anna “gift”, thus Eruanno or Erunno
• MELISSA (f.) - Greek ‘a bee’; nion, nier “honey-bee”, thus Nione or Niere
• RACHEL (f.) - Heb. ‘ewe’; *máme “she-sheep” (máma “sheep”, probably a general word), thus Máme itself
• TRACY (f.) - French ‘road, path’; tie “road, path”, so Tie as such
• TYLER (m.) - Old Eng. ’tiler of roofs’; Telutan (”roof-maker”: stem telu- “roof in”, stem tan “make, fashion”)

Everything Tolkien

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892-1973), courtesy of popularity of the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy has received tons of fanfare recently. His books are selling, the movies are making millions of dollars, and new fans are being made.

A Brief History of Tolkien & The Lord of the Rings

Tolkien grew up in England. By the time he was 12, both of his parents had died and his younger brother were taken in by a priest. He attended King Edward’s College and there he began to experience other languages and develop his linguistic abilities. After World War 1, he spent most of his adult life writing fiction, the most famous of which are The Hobbit and the LOTR(Lord of the Rings) trilogy. The LOTR is by far his most expansive work and incorporates previous creations. The Silmarillion, edited and published posthumously by his son Christopher Tolkien, was the back-story for LOTR which he’d been working on for quite a while. Tolkien also created several languages (including a couple elfish dialects) which appear in poems and dialogue throughout the books. The inclusion of this amount of work is an indication of how grandiose the tale is.

The LOTR series was originally meant to be a sequel to The Hobbit, which it is, but he became more excited about the project than he initially was and it grew into the trilogy and took him twelve years to complete. He never expected it to become popular and was surprised when it was. Based on the sales of the books, the money made by the movies, and the number of fans his works have spawned, it is one of the most incredible successes of twentieth century literature.

"Real Life"
Posted by Erundur Anwamehtar on May 5th, 2003, at 7:28am

There’s an article in the Sacramento Bee about Real Life, one of the comics I read on a regular basis.

The cast of [Greg] Dean’s online comic strip… is based on his girlfriend, an ex-girlfriend and several of his good buddies. All the joikkes, stories and gags are inspired by Dean’s own experienced, ruminations and observations.

The comic has a lot of technical and gaming related humor. Greg is also learning Japanese right now, which is one more point we relate on. I’ve even emailed him a couple times in the past and gotten a response, which is cool and rare for some webcomic authors who get a lot of email.
